Application programming interface (API)

A modular collection of reusable code components, integration tools, and standardized interfaces and protocols, collectively referred to as building blocks used in assembling business application software. They provide prebuilt, configurable capabilities that serve as common foundations supporting rapid application development, integration, process orchestration and automation. These application platform resources accelerate delivery and encourage consistency by letting developers assemble solutions using existing templates and libraries instead of coding custom solutions from scratch. They function as shared services to facilitate efficient co-creation through mix-and-match assembly allowing faster composition of interoperable components.
