Application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC)

A semiconductor electronic component built to carry out a singular or limited set of dedicated functions. Unlike general-purpose computing devices, application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) are custom-designed at the circuit level to efficiently perform specialized tasks dictated by their target application. This tailored hardware design allows compact implementation of complex functions optimized for parameters like speed, power consumption, and reliability. ASICs streamline and accelerate execution of the fixed application logic they are engineered for versus software running on programmable hardware. Their hardwired nature provides determinism well-suited for real-time processing in performance-critical embedded systems and other electronics.
